The city police have deployed more than 2,500 personnel from the Tamil Nadu special police battalion. Police used ropes and barricades to control the bulging crowd which tried to sneak into the hospital.
Police said drunk men near the hospital misbehaved with a few women police personnel in the crowd, following which they had to use mild force to disperse the crowd.
Top brass of the city police has instructed those in the field to keep the crowd under control. They were permitted to use lathis if the crowd remained unruly. Police have tightened security at the residences of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam. Security has been beefed up at Koyambedu bus terminus, Central and Egmore railway stations.
Police personnel have been deployed across MTC and TNSTC bus depots in the city as state intelligence agencies have got inputs about the crowds targeting public transport facilities. Police have also got inputs that many DMK cadres are rushing from their districts in separate buses and vans towards Chennai. According to police sources, around 100 vehicles have started from various districts for the city.
The Chennai police have drawn up detailed security arrangements to control this crowd. Senior officials have planned to bring in the commando force, rapid action force, swift action group and other special task forces to maintain peace.
